KwaMbanjane murderers handed four life sentences

Bongani Ntokozo and Sydney Luphondo appeared in court again on November 2 this year.

Two KwaMbanjane murderers have been handed four life sentences by the Madadeni High Court. The suspects stood accused of murdering an Emadlangeni Municipality Councillor and his family in 2019.

According to Lizzy Arumugam from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, the victims were at their home in Swoetmelk (KwaMbanjane) on the night of March 19, 2019, when the suspects struck.

There were seven people sitting in the house when the suspects entered their home. Four of the victims were shot and killed execution-style, while the three other people managed to flee the home and hide,” said Arumugam.

Utrecht Detectives initially took up the investigation. The case was then taken over by Vryheid Organized Crime, led by Colonel Attie Engelbrecht.

The unit eventually caught up to the suspects and arrested them. They appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court, where bail was successfully opposed.

Bongani Ntokozo and Sydney Luphondo appeared in court again on November 2 this year. They were finally found guilty and sentenced to four life sentences for murder.

Furthermore, they were sentenced to an additional 10 years [imprisonment] on three counts of attempted murder and 15 years for one count of attempted robbery.”

Vryheid Organized Crime’s Warrant Officer Sibiya was commended for his outstanding work with the case.
