ESTCOURT KZN: Fishing fund-raiser a flourishing success

Dozens of locals and visitors descended on Wagendrift Dam to participate or be a spectator, with 60 anglers part of the competition

Sunday (November 7) dawned bright and beautiful, and set the scene for a fishing competition with a difference.
Dozens of locals and visitors descended on Wagendrift Dam to participate or be a spectator, with 60 anglers part of the competition.

Hosted by Anil Sookraj (chairperson of the Estcourt Hospice Association and Estcourt Cancer Support Group), the competition was a fund-raising event. Estcourt Hospice and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CanSA) will receive R10 000 and R7 500 respectively.

“Like most non-governmental organisations, the Covid pandemic and the poor economic climate hampered fundraising, making service delivery difficult. Our committee is passionate about supporting CanSA as well as the palliative care and support provided locally by Estcourt Hospice,” said Mr Sookraj.

With a R2000 first prize for boat and shore anglers, there was stiff competition in the air. While the anglers were casting in their lines and hoping to land the prize, there was also a blood donor clinic and prostate screening.
At 15:00, the competition closed and a prize-giving ceremony was held.

Ashok Bansilal – first prize for heaviest fish caught from the bank.

Thanks to the generous sponsors, every angler received a prize.

Keith Vernall won first prize for the heaviest carp from a boat, weighing in at 3.62kg. Ashok Bansilal bagged first prize for his 890 gram carp that was caught from the shore.

Dharam Sewraj receives a special award from Heidi Jansen from CanSA for being an inspiration to all anglers.

Dharam Sewraj, who is an avid fisherman and also a paraplegic, was recognised for being an inspiration to other anglers and also received a prize.

Mr Sookraj would like to thank all the participants, spectators and sponsors for supporting the competition.
