NEWCASTLE KZN: Deputy Mayor and co-accused found ‘not guilty’

In September 2019, a municipal vehicle driven by Molelekoa crashed into two Osizweni homes.

Reuben Molelekoa, Deputy Mayor of Newcastle, and his co-accused, Bheki Madi, were cleared on all charges by the Madadeni Regional Court yesterday (October 25).

Following an incident in September 2019, where a municipal vehicle driven by Molelekoa crashed into two Osizweni homes, the Deputy Mayor was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, reckless and negligent driving, and speeding. Madi was charged with obstruction of justice after collecting Molelekoa’s belongings from the car before SAPS photographers processed the scene.

In handing down judgement yesterday, acting Magistrate Ngcobo said there was insufficient proof Molelekoa was drunk behind the wheel nor that he was speeding at the time of the crash.
