NEWCASTLE KZN: Workers protest in CBD against factory’s closure (WATCH)

Protesters have demanded that Cassim be allowed to re-open his factory, which was closed through a high court interdict.

Factory workers, who are believed to be employed by ActionSA mayoral candidate, Faizel Cassim, are currently preventing access to the Newcastle Municipality parking area.

The group of protesters have demanded that Cassim be allowed to re-open his factory, which was closed after the municipality obtained a high court interdict prohibiting the laundry business from operating for 30 days.

This follows claims by the municipality that Cassim polluted the Amcor Dam and Ncandu River, by allowing effluent from his business to enter the storm water system. Cassim has denied the allegations and the matter will proceed to the High Court next month.

Authorities are currently at the scene monitoring the situation.
