Ladysmith KZN: uThukela hands over spring protection scheme to Okhombe

The community will now have access to water closer to their homes

On Tuesday (October 12), Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson Cllr S Dlungwane visited Okhombe in Ward 7 (under Okhahlamba Local Municipality) to hand over a spring water scheme. He was accompanied by Ward Cllr Dladla and other officials.

Sydwalt Construction built the spring protection scheme to provide water to the community of Okhombe. The duration of the project was two months. The scheme is located high up in the mountains, consisting of three Jojo tanks with five communal stand pipes so that the community has access to water closer to their homes.

According to Sydwalt Construction, the project has been successful in its implementation. “Okhahlamba has an abundance of water, yet there are challenges with the supply thereof. National government has a plan to assist the community with a reliable water supply, as this is a short-term solution to assist the community for now while we wait for bigger projects,” said Cllr Dlungwane.

The team then proceeded to the Ward 5 areas of Eziqalabeni, Emanzana and eMableseni to officially hand over hand pumps to communities. “We are here to hand over these hand pumps to the community and they now belong to the very same communities. We therefore urge you to look after them well, but we will be responsible for their maintenance,” Cllr Dlungwane explained.
