Endumeni Municipality recently hosted a candle-lighting ceremony to honour the ‘fallen maidens’ who tragically passed away in an accident two years ago.

Thembeka Myeza, Asande Mthombeni, Nosipho Zondo, Nonjabulo Thusini and Sthabile Buthelezi died after the taxi they were travelling in burnt to ashes near Pomeroy. They were coming back from Greytown, where they had attended the Siyaya Emhlangeni programme.
Seven other girls were left fighting for their lives following the fatal accident.

In his address during the ceremony, Mayor Sduduzo Mdluli paid his respects to the maidens who lost their lives and thanked their families for allowing their children to participate in the programme.

The mayor also spoke deeply about being proud of our heritage, culture and tradition. He further discouraged young people from celebrating unplanned pregnancies or youngsters getting married and having children with irresponsible men who don’t even pay ‘damages’ to their families, as this goes against Zulu culture.

The mayor also promised to involve other departments in order to erect a Remembrance Stone at the site where the accident took place.

Speaking on behalf of the girls who survived the crash, Noluthando Khuzwayo thanked the municipality, the departments, neighbours and the rest of the community for their unshakable support when they needed it the most.

She further stated that they have never seen so much love from everyone and they highly appreciate it. “Enakwenza kithi nize nikwenze nakwabanye, siyabonga uthando olungaka.”
