NEWCASTLE KZN: Spring rainfall contribute to dam level increases

The department reported the Umgeni Water Supply System was above average at 75,3%.

When every drop counts, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is appreciative of a ‘minimal increase’ in dam levels across KwaZulu-Natal.

In the department’s weekly report, it was stated that dams increased by a fraction to 67%, thanks to spring showers in parts of the province. Compared to the same period last year, provincial water storage capacity was 56,2%.

DWS spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau commented that any increase was welcome, given the unpredictable rains experienced in 2020.

While most dam levels remain unchanged this week, Ratau reported the Umgeni Water Supply System was above average at 75,3%, down marginally from last week’s level of 75,5%.

“The fact that the system has been above average even during the winter season, serves as an assurance that there is no need to be alarmed for fear of lack of water supply,” Ratau said. “Having said this, we really would like to caution against reckless water use as temperatures will increase, which will result in the evaporation of water and will ultimately lead to a decrease of dam levels.”

Ratau said while DWS is keeping a close eye on the level of dams across the province and across the country, several projects are being implemented to augment water supply, including the raising of the dam wall at Hazelmere Dam. He expects this will increase the dam’s yield for medium term supply and bolster water in the KZN North Coast.

This week’s dam level figures are as follows:

Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam – 71,8% from 72% last week

Hluhluwe Dam – 87% from 86,6% last week

Hazelmere Dam – unchanged at 36,1%

Albert Falls Dam – 48,4% from 48,9% last week

Zaaihoek Dam – unchanged at 75,4%

Inanda Dam – unchanged at 86,2%

Woodstock Dam – 75,2% from 76,1% last week

Bivane Dam – unchanged at 82,1%

Klipfontein Dam – 82,5% from 82,8% last week

Driel Barrage – unchanged at 87.5%

Midmar Dam – 92,1% from 91,8% last week
