Two feisty and determined local women, Jessica Sooknanan and Yasmin Sukhai, are taking a stand against crime, corruption, drug abuse and other social ills plaguing the area.
Armed with vision, these two dynamic ladies are the founding members of a new activist group known as the Endumeni Women Activists Group.
This group aims to take to the streets and drum up support through marches in the fight against injustice, crime, and add a new glimmer of hope to what many call a ‘dying town’.
“Young people of the town are the future – they will carry a legacy and through this initiative, I want to give them something that is worth carrying,” Jessica enthused.
Though the group is in its early stages, it already has many do-gooders vowing rallying around to their cause.
The idea behind the activist group was born after the tragic murder of Rekha Govender in July. This murder sparked outcry and Jessica and Yasmin felt something inside of themselves stir, propelling them toward to start such a group that will see that justice is served.
The spike in drug and alcohol abuse in the area has also contributed significantly to the formation of the group.
The group will be available at all times to the public and will provide assistance and counselling, among other services.
“All counselling and assistance will be done by professionals insuring a difference is made in the community”.
“We will also march and protest for people who need justice to be served,” the pair declared.
The first official march will be on September 5 in Glencoe.
More details about the march will be released as soon as they become available. Meanwhile, these two aspiring ladies would like to invite the public to take a stand and make a difference.
