NEWCASTLE KZN: High-speed chase leads to arrest of armed robbery suspects

After the vehicle was stopped, the four suspects were arrested and three firearms were recovered.

Four suspects, believed to have robbed a retail outlet in Volksrust at gunpoint this morning (August 19), have been arrested.

According to Morn̬ Potgieter, the Operational Director at Ithemba Security and a member of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), the armed robbery was reported to all law enforcement agencies shortly after the incident occurred, along with a description of the getaway vehicle Рa Volkswagen Polo with Ladysmith licence plates.

He immediately issued a BOLO (Be On Look Out) across all security platforms. When members of the community spotted the vehicle a short while later, they contacted SAPS.

“A high-speed chase ensued between SAPS officers and the suspects, which resulted in law enforcement forcing the suspects’ vehicle off the road,” explained Potgieter.

Potgieter stated that after the vehicle was stopped, the four suspects were arrested and three firearms were recovered. SAPS officials have also recovered a number of items which are believed to be stolen.

Potgieter said the suspects may be linked to a series of armed robberies, as some of them have been arrested previously in connection with similar recent cases.

He concluded by thanking every person and official who played a role in the arrests.

“Thank you to every single community member, CPF member, security company, and SAPS member who collaborated. It was the incredible communication between all of the towns and members that resulted in this positive arrest. Thank you very much!”
