ESTCOURT KZN: Jacob Zuma admitted to hospital

This decision was prompted after a routine observation of Mr Zuma’s health

The Correctional Services Department confirmed this morning (August 6) that former president Jacob Zuma has been removed from the Estcourt Correctional Centre and admitted to an ‘outside hospital for medical observation’.

This decision was prompted after a routine observation of Mr Zuma’s health.

The department’s spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said that Mr Zuma’s healthcare would need involvement from the South African Military Services.

“The health of inmates is addressed under Section 35 (2) of the Constitution. This obliges the Department of Correctional Services to ensure that: everyone who is detained, including every sentenced prisoner, has the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including at least exercise and the provision of, at state expense, of adequate accommodation, nutrition, reading material and medical treatment,” commented Mr Nxumalo.

The former president handed himself over to authorities on July 8 and has been serving a 15-month sentence at the Estcourt Correctional Centre for contempt of court.
