WEENEN KZN: Attempted murder suspect arrested with stash of firearms

In addition to attempted murder, the suspect also faced charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition

Police were successful in their quest to locate a suspect linked to an attempted murder in the Manqomfini area of Weenen.

During an intelligence-driven operation, police arrested a 40-year-old man.

“The suspect was located in the Sahlumbe area, where he was found in possession of a pistol with three rounds of ammunition,” commented police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

More weapons and ammunition were found in an abandoned homestead when police proceeded to the Mtebhelu area.
An AK-47, a shotgun, as well as 30 rounds of various types of ammunition were seized.

The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests. Colonel Mbele explains that the man is suspected to be involved in the attempted murder of two brothers last year.

“It is alleged that on October 18 last year, at about 18:00, two brothers were travelling in a vehicle in the Manqomfini area in Weenen when they were shot at by a known suspect. No injuries were sustained, but their vehicle was damaged. Charges of attempted murder were opened at Weenen police station,” she commented.

In addition to attempted murder, the suspect also faced charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition when he appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on July 21.
