DUNDEE KZN: Des’s wish is to represent SA on the bowling green

"The members from my mother club, Dundee Bowling Club, have also been there for me in every respect. There are such great people and the camaraderie among members is so uplifting."

Des Johnson has a passion for the game of bowls, which he started playing in 2006 at Dundee Bowling Club. The Glencoe Correctional Services officer, who is also a keen school rugby coach, puts in hours of practice, hard work and determination for the game he has grown to love.

His highest accolade was in May when he was selected for the SA National Correctional Services team to play at the SA National Championships in Cape Town.

Astonishingly, Des was the only player from KZN to represent the Correctional Services team for the National Championships. “It was a great experience to play against top players in South Africa. The standard of play was exceptional and our Correctional Services team was unfortunate to miss out on a bronze medal.” Des, who is known in bowling circles for his exuberant sense of humour, has also represented KZN and the Northern Districts Bowls team on many occasions. His dream is to represent his country at international level.

Des’s hours of practice on the bowling greens have paid off, as last week, he clinched the Northern Natal Singles Championships played in Dundee – beating Ron Howe of Newcastle in the final. Des thanks his wife Sandra and children, Kevin (a school teacher at Sarel Cilliers High) and daughter Nicole for their support and love. “The members from my mother club, Dundee Bowling Club, have also been there for me in every respect.

There are such great people and the camaraderie among members is so uplifting.” Anyone wishing to support Des so he can achieve his dream of playing for the Proteas can contact him on 084 750 7777 to ensure that he keeps Dundee Bowling Club’s flag flying high.
