NQUTHU KZN: Commuters protest over taxi fares
With petrol going up today at midnight, it is likely that there will be little relief for commuters.
A dispute over taxi fares in the Nquthu area has seen roads blocked since Saturday by protesting commuters.
Residents from the areas around the town say they want the taxi fare to decrease to R15 as they believe R20 is too expensive for what they say is a 15 minute drive.
Commuters are also upset that a luggage charge of R50 is levied on those carrying bags of mealie meal. SAPS again yesterday had to remove rocks, burning tyres and other obstacles from the P54.
Some commuters who had to get to work were forced to walk over a kilometre to the Thelezini area to catch a local taxi which they said cost them R18 for a 15 minute ride. They want the ride to cost R15.
They say that a taxi from Bloodriver to Nquthu costs R25, up from R23. The protest is expected to intensify today with another four areas, Ndindindi, Zicole, Kwabiya and Mkhonjani, threatening to start the strike on Tuesday at 5:00 am.
