Ladysmith KZN: uThukela sets the record straight regarding ‘unfounded allegations’

The municipality says that it rejects the false allegations with the contempt they deserve

uThukela District Municipality says it is concerned about the employees who took part in a protest within the municipal premises on Thursday (July 1).

uThukela released a media statement that had the following to say…

The strike was unprotected, meaning that the ‘no work, no pay’ rule will apply and it was also in contravention with Covid-19 restrictions.

While the employer is obligated under the Occupational Health & Safety Act to provide a safe and healthy working environment, staff members must also comply with those regulations, including adhering to the Covid-19 restrictions and ensuring that they assist the employer in keeping everyone at the workplace safe and healthy.

In relation to the allegations made by the labour unions, the employer is adamant that facts have been twisted and the truth bent to feed a propagandist narrative of a non-caring and reckless municipality.

The employer is of the view that there have been some brazen efforts, by some union leaders and some uThukela employees who have an axe to grind with the municipality, to spread outlandish and baseless claims intended to tarnish the image of uThukela District Municipality.

According to a detailed report presented by management, all departments within the municipality have received their personal protection equipment (PPE).

So the municipality therefore rejects the false allegations with the contempt they deserve. It feels that the allegations are not only fictitious, but spurious and baseless. The only intention they serve is to cause damage and create a false impression of instability within the municipality.

These allegations are part of a smear campaign against the municipality, with the management being the prime target of this vicious and unrelenting onslaught.

Management also believes these are desperate efforts to smudge the name and image of the municipality and its councillors so they are seen to be making wrong decisions and are therefore unfit to hold office.

uThukela calls upon all parties concerned to refrain from making unfounded allegations and misleading members of the public.
