VRYHEID KZN: 36 years behind bars for murder and attempted murder

He was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for each count of murder and six years for attempted murder

22-year-old Mlungisi Mamba has been sentenced to 36 years’ imprisonment for murder and attempted murder. The incident occurred in the Ebasuthwini area in September 2020.

Mamba had an argument with his neighbour, Bonginkosi Hlatshwayo (22), and later that fateful night, Mamba stabbed Hlatshwayo several times with a spear. Hlatshwayo managed to escape and flee, but then Mamba attacked and killed Hlatshwayo’s mother, Ntombifuthi Phakathi (63) and younger sister, Nkosingiphile Hlatshwayo (19). Mamba fled the scene and was only arrested some time later.

Pongola Regional Court prosecutor Nomusa Precious Nkosi described Mamba’s actions as ruthless, since he went to Hlatshwayo’s house in search of him and in turn attacked other family members in the safety of their own home.

He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for each count of murder and six years for attempted murder. All three sentences will run consecutively. The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal welcomed the successful prosecution.
