VRYHEID KZN: Over 1700 arrests in KZN for contravention of lockdown regulations

Another 137 were arrested for selling or consuming liquor in a public space

1763 people were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal for various contraventions of adjusted alert level 3 lockdown from June 16 to 27. 1025 of those people were arrested for not wearing a mask in a public space, while 592 ‘offenders’ were arrested for breaking the curfew. Another 137 were arrested for selling or consuming liquor in a public space. “Since the announcement of the latest level 3 lockdown regulations, we have stepped up our daily operations focused on ensuring that all citizens in the province comply with the regulations to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus. In light of the president’s announcement that the country has moved to an adjusted alert level 4 lockdown, we are once again urging citizens to comply with the regulations as law enforcement officers continue to work around the clock with all other government departments to protect communities from being exposed to the Covid-19 virus,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. He is also concerned about the large number of citizens in the province who are in contravention of the lockdown regulations.

Unfortunately, the exact statistics for arrests made in Vryheid were not available, but local police have confirmed that ‘a lot’ of arrests have been made for failing to comply, ie wearing of masks in a public place, as well as liquor-related issues.

“We appeal to anyone with information with regards to contravention of lockdown regulations to please contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report anonymously via the ‘MySAPS’ App,” Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi concluded.
