NEWCASTLE KZN: Fairleigh residents plead for municipal intervention

Residents in Ward 25 have asked for the municipality to intervene to help end the scourge of drug and substance abuse.

A Civil Rights Group from Fairleigh and surrounds (Ward 25) marched to the Newcastle Municipality on Scott Street to hand over a memorandum to Speaker of Council, Samukelisiwe Yende in June.

According to the memorandum, residents are asking for municipal intervention to deal with the scourge of drug and substance abuse in the area.

“The memorandum also contains a call to increase police visibility in the area, a plea for the municipality to facilitate programmes aimed at drug and substance abuse and a request for sport, recreation and rehabilitation facilities,” explained municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo.

He confirmed the municipality would respond to the memorandum within 14 days.
