Ladysmith KZN: A ‘victory’ for Defy workers as strike ends
Defy and NUMSA have reached a settlement that pleases the workers
The strike at Defy has ended with the workers ’emerging victorious’, after the union reached a satisfactory settlement with the employer.
The workers were demanding an increase of R20 an hour; the reason being that there are employees who were transferred from East London and those workers have allegedly already received an increase.
The protest led to a total shutdown of the factory in May.

Defy and the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) reached a settlement whereby there will be a R7 increase per hour as a phased-in process towards the R20 that was allegedly paid to some employees effective from July 21. The employees who are paid hourly will also receive a R500 per week incentive.
