Ladysmith KZN: Mayor hands over spring water to the community

uThukela says that delivering water to rural areas remains essential

On Tuesday (June 22), uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko, accompanied by Ward Cllr Mfuphi, visited Vimbukhalo (under Okhahlamba Local Municipality) to ‘hand over’ a spring water supply to the community. Outlining the scope of work, Sydwalt Construction (the contractor) said that uThukela gave them a project to carry out spring protection, with five communal standpipes, which is now complete. Only two remaining stand pumps have to be installed when there is full water pressure.

Mayor Mazibuko told those gathered on site that, as uThukela District, they are mandated to make sure that communities, particularly in the rural areas, have access to water. ‘’We are here today to hand over spring water to the community, as it now belongs to them. We therefore urge you to look after it,’’ said the mayor. He added that he was disheartened when he learned that some community members are unable to access water due to illegal connections in the area after the contractor completed the project. The mayor then promised to come back to resolve this issue, as some residents came forward and admitted that they have connected illegally to their households. Cllr Mfuphi said that all hardships they face in relation to water challenges will be a thing of the past soon. He said the community must make sure that they safeguard their own infrastructure, because it is there to service them.
