Ladysmith KZN: Legendary coach helps plan an academy for our town

The aim of the five-year plan is to throw an athletics lifeline to those who are prepared to work hard to achieve success

Legendary coach Lux Gordhon was recently in Ladysmith to meet with former athletes to discuss a feasibility study to establish an athletics academy here in town.

Gordhon is no stranger to Ladysmith, as he was a PE (Physical Education) teacher at Windsor Secondary School in the 70s and went on to accrue many accolades in sports, in general.

His mission is to afford opportunities for athletes to excel through talent identification programmes, coaching and competitions.

The academy will also strive to provide support to parents, athletes and coaches through sponsorships, follow-up clinics and event-specific courses. It will also serve to identify and develop talent in KZN hubs.

Gordhon said that the aim of the “five-year plan is to throw an athletics lifeline to those who are prepared to work hard to achieve success. “In keeping with the IAAF (World Athletics) philosophy, we are engaging in a Long-Term Athlete Development Programme (LTAD), hence a five-year plan.

“We are targeting learners of about 10 to 15 years old. This will help to develop their talent in their primary and high school life, and beyond. Of course, Aspire Sports Coaching Academy (his academy in Durban) will assist any athlete in any age group.”

A small task team of Nash Prithviraj, Charlie Maistry and Shah Khan has been set up to conduct a feasibility study to promote athletics coaching in Ladysmith, and they are keen for former students and athletes of Lux Gordhon to engage with each other and share ideas.
