Ladysmith KZN: Electrical cables finally repaired in Residency Road

The cables were initially wrapped around a tree, but came loose due to storms, wind and rain

A resident is fed up with Alfred Duma Local Municipality for ‘taking so long to carry out proper repairs’ after a heavy-duty truck ripped through electrical cables in Residency Road earlier this year.

The cables were hanging a few metres above the ground and it took days before municipal workers attended to the situation. The cables were then wrapped around a tree and joined at three places with tape.

”Is this how you fix electricity cables?” questioned the furious resident.

He said that every time it would rain, the lights would trip and go off. He complained numerous times to the municipality, asking them to please fix the cables properly. Days and weeks passed, but nothing was done.

Due to storms and wind and rain, the cables came loose and were again dangling above the ground.

“This was so dangerous, as anyone could’ve tripped and injured themselves, not to mention the possibility of electrocution.”

After months of complaints, the municipality finally responded today (June 4) and repaired the cables.

The resident is pleased that the matter has finally been resolved, but says there is no excuse for the municipality dragging their heels and taking so long to attend to a potentially hazardous situation.
