Ladysmith KZN: Defy factory shut down as strike intensifies

Everything is currently at a standstill at the factory and a memorandum will be presented to management

The strike at the Defy Appliances factory, situated in Pieters Industrial Park, has gained momentum.

Today (May 26), the workers put everything on standstill, as they have shut down all factory operations. The workers gathered in large numbers and blockaded the factory entrance.

It is alleged that the workers are demanding an increase of R20 an hour; the reason being that there are employees who were transferred from East London and those workers have allegedly already received an increase.

It is also believed that the East London employees were hired without proper procedures being followed.

Another issue surrounds the allegations against the HR manager, whom they accuse of threatening employees. Therefore, the workers are demanding that the HR manager be suspended pending an investigation.

“We have compiled a memorandum with all our demands and we will be presenting it to management later today,” said Ladysmith NUMSA representative Cyril Khuzwayo.
