NEWCASTLE KZN: Local police take R72K worth of drugs off the streets

Five suspects were arrested and charged.

A joint intelligence driven operation between Osizweni Crime Prevention members, Osizweni detectives and Public Order Policing led to the arrests of several suspects earlier this month.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, the operation was focused on drugs and other cases in the Osizweni policing area.

“On May 1 at midday, members went to a house in Section A and arrested one suspect for being in possession of heroin. They recovered 27 small parcels of the drug during this arrest,” said Arumugam.

The next morning, law enforcement officials arrived at a home in Section F, where they affected another arrest and recovered 19 full mandrax tablets and cash.

“That same afternoon, members proceeded to the Inverness Farm area and arrested one suspect for dealing in mandrax. During this raid, officers recovered 7 340 full mandrax tablets.”

Continuing the good work on May 2, officers convened in Section A and arrested two more suspects – one for being in possession of nine full mandrax tables and nine small parcels of heroin, and the other for being in possession of four full and four half mandrax tablets.

Arumugam revealed the street value of the drugs recovered from the weekend operation was estimated to be approximately R74 200.

“In total, five suspects were arrested. They were aged 19, 25, 26, 29 and 41 and have appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court,” she concluded.
