NEWCASTLE KZN: Learners take on Parliamentary duties

Learners were asked to discuss the topic 'does democracy serve me?'.

Learners from schools across the Newcastle area were invited to a Youth Parliament on May 6, which was hosted at the Newcastle Council Chambers (Show Grounds).

Hosts of the event explained the event was the result of a partnership between the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) and the Department of Education, and the goal was to ‘infuse democracy content in the school curriculum’.

Learners assumed the role of Parliamentary representatives, accepting or opposing fellow members while answering the question: ‘does democracy serve me?’
