Bergville police are piecing together the evidence and statements after two people were killed outside the town’s Anglican Church yesterday (May 5).

The search is on for five suspects that got away in a white Kia sedan and a silver VW Polo after the shooting.

Police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi explained that the deceased were at a meeting when tragedy struck at about 2.55pm.

“One male, who was standing just outside the venue, was attacked by three unknown male suspects who just alighted from a white Kia sedan with no number plates and shot him,” said Captain Nyathi.

A second person met a similar fate when he rushed outside to see what the commotion was about.

“It is alleged that when he saw what was happening, he took out his firearm with intention to assist the person who was being attacked. Two more male suspects alighted from a silver VW Polo and joined the fight by shooting. They managed to shoot both victims to death,” commented Captain Nyathi.

It is alleged that one of the suspects was injured but managed to escape.
