NEWCASTLE KZN: Helpful hints for all dog owners

Follow these easy tips for a healthy and happy dog.

If you are the proud owner of a dog, he/she can guard your property and also be a faithful friend.

However, according to Heather Gero of the Newcastle SPCA, your beloved dog can only serve you if he or she is properly looked after and is healthy, strong and happy.

Gero has provided the following tips for all dog owners:

  • Your dog must be fed properly to keep him or her healthy. Try to feed the dog some meat, which is its natural food, or if this becomes too expensive then a good quality dog food is essential.
  • Make sure your dog is fed sufficient food – follow the instructions on the bag of food you buy.
  • Giving your dog water once a day only is not enough! “Clean water must be made available throughout the day and should be put in a cool place. Give your dog a proper bowl, which cannot be knocked over. You can put a heavy stone in a bucket for a large dog or dig a hole in the ground for a small dog, to make sure it remains sturdy to avoid spillage,” advised Gero.
  • Just as you have a house to protect you from the elements, so should your dog have a place that will keep him/her warm when it is cold, cool when it is hot and dry when it rains.
  • Dogs need exercise. If you do not have a yard large enough for the size of your dog, Gero advises you take it on regular walks – “This will not only benefit your dog, but you as well.”
  • Dogs need stimulation. Buy breed specific toys for your pet to keep him/her entertained when you do not have the time to play with them.
  • Keep your dog free from fleas and ticks that can make it extremely ill or could possibly even lead to death. Give your dog a regular wash and dip.

“If you follow these easy tips, you will have a healthy and happy pet,” concluded Gero.
