NEWCASTLE KZN: Here is what Newcastle SAPS needs you to know about robberies

Newcastle police have issued the following tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of business or home robbery.

Criminals are still operating and targeting businesses and homes.

This is according to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, who has advised both business and home owners to follow and enforce the following safety tips to protect themselves and their property:

Businesses:

  • Don’t have too much cash on hand in the office
  • Be on the lookout for untrustworthy clients
  • Do not keep the company open until the wee hours of the morning
  • Avoid being alone in the office, especially late at night
  • After the company has closed, do not open for anybody
  • If at all necessary, install security cameras
  • Employ security staff as a precaution
  • As much as possible, be careful when dealing with money and bank cash.

Home owners:

  • Always keep an eye out for suspicious people and vehicles in your neighborhood
  • Install security gates on access doors and burglar bars on windows to enhance security
  • If you’re going to be out for an extended period of time, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on things
  • Do not allow outsiders to pass through your gates or doors
  • Verify anyone’s credentials before hiring them, and verify a contractor’s validity before granting access to the premises
  • Watch dogs are also effective thief deterrents
  • Be on the lookout for suspicious people loitering on the sidewalks and in the street as you approach your motor vehicle gate.

“ Your safety is absolutely critical, so take care and fight crime without jeopardising your life. Be safe today and alive tomorrow,” Arumugam concluded.
