NEWCASTLE KZN: Three arrested after CBD business break-in backfires

A total of 90 cellphones were stolen, with a total value of R89 718.

Three foreign nationals have been arrested after they were caught breaking into a retail chain store on Scott Street.

On April 3, the Ithemba Security Tactical team collected information on a break-in at Markhams in Newcastle’s CBD.

Various units were activated, according to Mornè Potgieter, and the area was quickly cornered off for the tactical team to sweep the building.

“A number of security companies, Newcastle CPF members, and the Newcastle SAPS tracked down the suspects,” confirmed Potgieter.

The suspects were able to flee through the ceiling and gain access to another outlet in the same building, where they attempted to avoid capture.

When there was no other choice, dedicated operational members pursued the suspects through the roof, where they surrendered to the ground-level operational team.

“A large number of mobile phones, cash, a grinding machine and disks and housebreaking tools were discovered in the hands of the suspects,” he said.

Potgieter thanked all those who were involved in the successful arrests.

Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Department confirmed that Newcastle Police are investigating a case of business robbery that had occurred on April 3 at about 9pm.

“The ceiling was reportedly cut open to gain access. A total of 90 cellphones were stolen, with a total value of R89 718. Three offenders have been apprehended. The police investigation is still ongoing,” said Arumugam.
