ESTCOURT KZN: Exciting fun day planned at Wagendrift Dam

Entertainment for the children includes boat rides, an Easter egg hunt, as well as a jumping castle

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Honorary Officers are busy planning an exciting day at Wagendrift Dam on April 3.

With entertainment for the children, fun trail runs and walks, an Easter egg hunt and a boerewors competition, the day promises to cater for everyone.

Natasha Blaker from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) Honorary Officers explained that the team of officers are part of a volunteer service organisation to supplement and support the staff of Ezemvelo in their conservation work within protected areas and district conservation areas.

“There are approximately 750 members assigned to 45 groups within the “garden province” of KZN – each group is affiliated to a specific reserve or conservation district. Our involvement ranges from hospitality at the various reserves to guided trails and other duties in the Big-5 reserves like Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, Itala and Tembe Elephant Park. The Honorary Officer groups undertake fund-raising initiatives for strategic projects aimed at providing a better experience for visitors to EKZNW Reserves. These fund-raising initiatives include mountain-bike races, trail runs, guided walks, visitor guide sales and many more,” said Mrs Blaker.

Therefore, the fun day at Wagendrift Dam is also a fund-raising activity, and the money will be used for projects like road maintenance.

The day kicks off at 8am with registration for the trail runs, which include 2.5km and 6km routes.

“If you’re not a runner, you can walk and enjoy the absolute beauty of the dam. There are two tracks (6km and 2.5km) and both are scenic routes around the dam and through a neighbouring farm,” said Mrs Blaker.

Entertainment for the children includes boat rides, an Easter egg hunt, as well as a jumping castle. There is also a boerewors competition.

“We have invited local butcheries to donate wors; this will be braaied to perfection and sold as wors rolls to the public. You will get a taster and you can choose which wors you want on your roll. Each buyer gets a vote. The winner will receive bragging rights in the form of a framed certificate of the ‘Best Local Boerewors’,” concluded Mrs Blaker.

Due to Covid-19 rules, only 250 people will be allowed to enter Wagendrift Dam.
