DUNDEE KZN: Calls made to provide for street traders

The removal of a street trader who was selling traditional medicine and had set up his ‘home base’ on the Willson Street pavement has been widely welcomed.
The trader has now moved into a private property in a lane connecting King Edward and Willson streets, but it is not clear if he is also sleeping overnight there. Traffic officials who moved the trader said they have no authority over trading on privately-owned property.
However, FC Bester of the Endumeni Residents’ Association (ERA) said more should be done to assist street traders in terms of setting up a formal trading area that could be controlled and doesn’t impact on businesses that pay ‘huge rentals or rent’.
“Informal traders are working to feed their families, just as formal traders are. But we need both, as jobs are just about non-existent in our area. The municipality would do well to drive to Komatipoort or Hazeyview in Mpumalanga to see how those municipalities have assisted their traders in setting up formal shelters in one area. A minimum fee is charged to assist with cleaning, etc, and everyone wanting to buy from the traders knows exactly where to go. The formal businesses are happy, as the pavements are no longer cluttered with masses of traders.”
