VRYHEID KZN: Automatic rifle and ammo found in empty house

A tip-off from a reliable source identified the homestead where the rifle was thought to be hidden.

The Golela Task Team recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during a recent intelligence-driven operation in the Buxedene area.

The team were following up on information about an unlicensed automatic rifle that was allegedly about to be sold to unknown people in the Nongoma policing precinct. A tip-off from a reliable source identified the homestead where the rifle was thought to be hidden.

An AK-47 rifle, 14 rounds of live ammunition, an empty magazine and one fitted silencer were found abandoned in the house, where there were no occupants. The house belonged to a Mr Zulu, who is deceased.

The recoveries were booked into the exhibit register at Nongoma SAPS.

No arrests have been made, but an enquiry docket will be opened for investigation.
