VRYHEID KZN: College students close down campus as part of nationwide protest

students want allowances from NSFAS so they will be able to pay for their needs and also pay their rent."

With plans in place to shut down all the country’s public universities and other institutions of higher learning in a nationwide protest, Mthashana TVET College students protested outside the premises on Monday morning.

The students sang and danced outside the college as they blocked the entrance point. One of the students who was there during the protest said they are not satisfied with a lot of things, but the one that stands out is the NSFAS funds, which they have not received.

Buhle Nzimande, who is the chairperson of the EFF Student Command, mentioned that this is a nationwide protest conducted by students, since they are not happy with government. “We advocate for TVET students to receive the same treatment as the students at universities. Secondly, students want allowances from NSFAS so they will be able to pay for their needs and also pay their rent.” Nzimande went on to say that, “Students who are repeating are told to only come to college when they have an exam to write, due to Covid-19 regulations. We don’t find logic in that. How is it possible to study at home without a lecturer, when you failed while the lecturer was in front of you? The most confusing part is that repeaters were also told to pay the same amount in tuition fees as full-time students. It does not make sense.” Nzimande concluded by saying they do not have an exact date for when the protest will end, but if their grievances are not met, the protest will continue.
