NEWCASTLE KZN: One suspect behind bars for possession of illegal firearm

The suspect's firearm license is believed to have expired in 2016.

One person was arrested on Saturday, March 6 after he was caught in possession of an illegal firearm.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, the arrest followed a tip-off to Osizweni Crime Prevention members, while the team was conducting an intelligence driven operation.

“Once police received the tip-off, they went to the suspect’s homestead in Section A, near the Ezinkukwini store. There, they managed to recover a 9mm pistol, one empty magazine and a brown gun holster,” confirmed Arumugam.

During the course of the investigation and subsequent arrest, police discovered the suspect’s firearm license had expired in 2016.

The suspect was promptly arrested and has since appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court.
