DUNDEE KZN: Municipality steps up war against electricity theft
Electricity theft is costing Endumeni over R25-million a year
The promised campaign to root out electricity theft has been stepped up with the Municipality inspecting suspected tampered meters – backed up by officials from the Labour Department, SAPS, the Town Planning Department and Fire Brigade.
The team swooped on a cafe on Beaconsfield Street this morning where the owner was found to have illegally meter-tampered – apparently for the second time. He will be issued with a ”substantial fine”.
Several shops in the area were also checked for unspecified illegal activities including labour law violations and non-compliance of Town Planning regulations.
Checks will continue throughout the area. Mayor Mdluli has repeatedly stressed that electricity theft, costing ratepayers over R25-million a year in lost revenue, is crippling the town’s finances. Â
