NEWCASTLE KZN: Security guards tied up during Utrecht DSD robbery

The suspects made off with a Nissan bakkie, petrol card, laptops and computers.

Utrecht Police are investigating a case of armed robbery after a group of unknown African males stormed the Utrecht Department of Social Development at 2am on January 18.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications department, the suspects overpowered security guards and tied them up with cable ties before moving from the guard’s house to the main building.

“The security guards were forced to hand over the keys to the main office to the suspects, and also to take them to the Manager’s office,” confirmed Arumugam.

“The suspects took a vehicle key, a Nissan Bakkie NP300 with registration KZN 72873, a petrol card, laptops and computers. The estimated value of the goods stolen is R121 300.”

Arumugam said the suspects fled the scene without injuring the victims and urged residents to come forward if they could assist with the investigation by providing information.
