VRYHEID KZN: Generosity of local businesses goes a long way

We knew we had to get to these families and place those hampers at their feet, but it was not easy

Vryheid and the surrounding area experienced the aftermath of Cyclone Eloise, which brought severe downpours accompanied by strong winds and flooding. Several communities in Vryheid suffered when the devastation hit. Homes, farming areas and businesses were flooded, leaving some people in desperate need of assistance. Boxer Superstores, along with the support of Pick ‘n Pay’s ‘Feed the Nation’ fund, reacted to those in need by handing out food hampers to the families that were most affected. “We managed to identify families who had lost everything in the floods. They had no food and many of them had children to take care of. With the help of local councillors and NGOs, we were able to find those most in need and deliver enough food hamper relief to last each family for several weeks. I am glad that Boxer was able to help those in our community when they needed us most,” said Boxer regional manager Richard Nkosi. He continued by saying that the devastation was particularly bad in Vryheid and that even though the floods and rain had let up slightly, those who had been affected by the torrent of water were in difficult-to-reach areas. “Some of the roads are still a mess. The mud is thick and slippery. We knew we had to get to these families and place those hampers at their feet, but it was not easy. Seeing how much damage has been caused by this flood is heartbreaking, but seeing the relief and joy as we handed the families their hampers made us all very proud,” Nkosi added. This generous donation of nutritious hampers from Boxer and Pick ‘n Pay will ‘carry’ families for the next few weeks, giving them the necessary sustenance to rebuild their homes.
