Ladysmith KZN: Safety tips during flooding

Avoid walking through flowing water, as currents can be deceptive

Floods cause outages, damage infrastructure, trigger landslides and can even be deadly. Heavy rainfall in a short period of time causes water levels in rivers and dams to rise rapidly, elevating the risk of flooding.

Torrential rains and flooding in Ladysmith on Monday night (February 8) led to the closure of several roads (including Lyell Street), with Murchison Street becoming the alternative route for many people trying to make their way home.

Ladysmith residents are urged to avoid walking through flowing water, as currents can be deceptive. Shallow, fast-moving water can knock you off your feet.

Avoid swimming through fast-flowing water, as you may get swept away or struck by an object in the water.

Avoid driving through flooded areas at this time. Videos went viral on social media of motorists taking big risks driving along Lyell Street, as it was flooded.

Avoid reconnecting your power supply until a qualified engineer has checked it, and be alert for gas leaks.

Stay safe, Ladysmith…
