Vryheid KZN: Arrests made for unlicensed firearm and ammunition

‘Operation Syabopha’ has resulted in two arrests and the recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The operation was conducted in Ekushumayeleni, kwaCeza policing area, and saw police following up on information regarding unlicensed firearms suspected to have been kept by late taxi boss Mr Sputla Mpungose.

Police officers recovered three 9mm live rounds of ammunition at Mpungose’s homestead. One suspect, aged 20, was arrested for possession of unlicensed ammunition. The officers then proceeded to the Sangweni homestead after receiving information that the late Mr Mpungose’s firearms were being hidden in the Sangweni premises. A search turned up an AK-47 rifle, plus four rifle parts. A 48-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
