NEWCASTLE KZN: Blood donors in NKZN saved 4083 lives
Blood donors helped SANBS in NKZN achieve 97.4% of its December target.
The NKZN branch of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is the top performer for December 2020, achieving 97.4% of its monthly blood donation target.
Donor Relations Practitioner, Shavani Sewpaul said this was the first time NKZN achieved this fear for December specifically. Of a target of 1 397 units, NKZN donors brought in 1 361 units (36 less than its target).
“Thank you to our blood donors and our media for your unwavering support,” she commented. “You helped SANBS save 4 083 lives this December – thank you!”
Sewpaul explained that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many regular donors did not leave town over the festive season, which meant many were available to donate blood. Fortunately however, SANBS has the support of malls in NKZN, who helped facilitate clinics since the start of the national lockdown.
The service also welcomed school learners, who donated over the holiday period, and a number of new donors who ‘stepped up to the plate’.
While uncertain what the future holds for SANBS, Sewpaul said school clinics would begin at the end of January, pending on the status of the lockdown.
