NEWCASTLE KZN: Watch as residents march to break the silence

Lifeline says more needs to done to fight against the scourge of abuse in communities.

A collective effort by several stakeholders saw residents marching against the scourge of gender-based violence this morning (November 30).

The Amajuba District’s Lifeline and Rape Crisis, Newcastle Municipality Special Programmes, SANCA, the I Matter Foundation and other organisations joined hands in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Woman and Children campaign.

The march started from Newcastle High School and led to the Newcastle Town Hall, where various speakers took to the podium to address issues affecting women and children and encouraged community members to break the silence against abuse.

Sinikiwe Biyela from Lifeline Pietermaritzburg said Amajuba District’s statistics showed that from April 2020 to October 2020, the organisation gave counselling to 1 243 people affected by abuse.

“These are reported cases. That means the number might be higher as there are cases that are not reported. Abuse breaks peoples’ souls; people are walking around but they are dead inside,” said Biyela.
