VRYHEID: Vryheid High School bids farewell to one of its greats, Mr Le Roux

This article will never do justice to how much value Mr Le Roux added to Vryheid High

Submitted by Vryheid High School Students and educators alike had the difficult task of saying goodbye to one of the greats, Mr Anton Le Roux. It is impossible to measure what Mr Le Roux has meant for Vryheid High School (VHS) through all his loyal years of service. Mr Le Roux has played a role in many lives; a role model of note. The demands he made and the standards he set have helped form both teacher and learner. The Le Roux legacy runs deep in Vryheid High’s folklore. The first Le Roux to step foot on Vryheid High grounds dates back as far as 1939, when Mr Le Roux’s father matriculated. Vryheid High School has had a Le Roux in some form present at the school from 1962 to date. Mr Le Roux’s own journey started at Vryheid High School in the year 1973 as a student. He was a hero on the sports field, as he boasts with a number of accolades. His record reads as follows: ATHLETICS · Victor Ludorum · Records in javelin and triple jump · Natal colours for athletics · Received honours for athletics CRICKET · First team · Natal colours · Received honours for cricket RUGBY · First team · Craven Week · Vice-captain of the Craven Week team Mr Le Roux was elected as a hostel and school prefect. He furthered his studies at the University of the Free State, where it was rumoured that Shimlas squad was picked around him. Mr Le Roux made his great return in 1987, when he was appointed as a woodwork and technical drawing teacher at Vryheid High. He wasn’t a teacher for very long though, as he was promoted to HOD within five years of teaching. No educator could ever match his willingness. If there was a task at hand, he was sure to be first in line to take up the challenge. Whether the school needed a sports master, coach, head of transport, or someone to organise a rugby week, Mr Le Roux could always be counted on. A man of his stature will always continue climbing the ranks, as it was only a matter of time until he reached the summit. He was appointed deputy principal in 2007 and then headmaster in 2012. He took over the reins at Vryheid High at a challenging time, but most definitely left it in 2020 in a better state than when he received it. If there was ever a person who deserved a retirement filled with fishing and golfing, it is most definitely Mr Le Roux. This article will never do justice to how much value Mr Le Roux added to Vryheid High, but we hope it will make you realise how we valued you. You will forever be remembered as a true legend of Vryheid High. We, at VHS, wish you a happy retirement filled with only prosperous days.
