NEWCASTLE: Cyclist narrowly avoids disaster at flooded Amcor Dam bridge

The low bridge is currently underwater and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.

The low bridge on the Amcor Dam road (Umfolozi Avenue/Marconi Drive) is currently underwater.

Persistent rainfall over the weekend has caused the dam to overflow at the wall, with traffic officials currently diverting motorists and pedestrians attempting to use this route. Barricades have also been set up on the Industrial side approach.

The situation almost took a dramatic turn earlier this morning, when a cyclist seemingly ignored a traffic official’s instruction and attempted to cross the flooded bridge. He struggled to maintain his footing but fortunately managed to turn back and avoid being swept away.

The bridge is currently underwater.

More rainfall is predicted throughout the day (the South African Weather Service reports rainfall well into this afternoon), with Tuesday and Wednesday experiencing drier conditions. At this stage, more rain can be expected on Thursday as well.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution and residents in general should avoid flooded roadways.
