GLENCOE: Sarel Cilliers zooms into the future with webinar learning

This initiative challenges learners to be leaders and agents of change in their schools

The Department of Basic Education, UNICEF and Agape Youth Movement (AYM) have partnered on an interactive and exciting initiative in engaging learners on various topics that are meant to empower them on how to build resilience and become better leaders.

Seven Sarel Cilliers students were chosen to take part in webinar chats where, using sport and play-based activities as effective programmatic tools, learners will exchange ideas on pertinent topics. Using sport as the basis for discussion, students are encouraged to explore matters such as Self-Awareness, Children’s Rights, Gender Equality, Sexual Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS, School-Based Violence, Peer Pressure and Substance Abuse via chats on Zoom.

This initiative challenges learners to be leaders and agents of change in their schools and communities by identifying and addressing social ills, as well as teaching them valuable technical skills.

The students were excited to take part, with their first webinar chat taking place last week. The students were put into different chats groups and encouraged to meet other students from all over the province.

With over 70 students taking part in this initiative, there were many opinions and ideas put forward, and there was lots of lively and sometimes opinionated interaction. This is a fantastic opportunity for Sarel Cilliers students to hone their communication skills.

For many of the learners, this was the first time they were using webinar and they adapted quickly. Congratulations to Slindokuhle Shabalala, Duduzile Shelembe, Ayanda Majola, Siyabonga Khumalo, Mpilenhle Zikolala, Nkululeko Mdhluli, Mongezi Langa and Anele Mkhliphi for being selected to take part.
