Ladysmith KZN: “Remove the Speaker”

The protesters stood united and said “enough is enough”

Bergville residents took to the streets on Monday (October 12) to voice their grievances and call on Okhahlamba Municipality to remove the Council Speaker, Sthembiso Zulu, with immediate effect.

The protesters stood united and said “enough is enough” They want the Speaker to step down from his position, as they accuse him of misconduct.

During the march that was led by uBumbano Lokuthula Organisation chairperson Dr Andile Hlatshwayo, the angry protesters also accused the Speaker of nepotism.

“We strongly believe he violated his oath of office as the Speaker. It is alleged that the Speaker is engaged in acts of nepotism, and influences the administration to do as he pleases.  All comrades’ deployment and nepotism at Okhahlamba Municipality must be stopped and removed with immediate effect.”

R3 million was given by the small business enterprise to the municipality to oversee a bee-keeping project in March 2019 and it is alleged that this money has disappeared. The protesters are also calling for the immediate suspension of Cllr Sgubudu, as he is being investigated for corruption and fraud.

“We ask for the intervention of the Premier on the matter of the piggery project taking place in Ward 10, as the community members of Ward 10 are displeased at how the project is being operated.”

The memorandum was handed over to Mr Jabulani Makhathini (a representative from the office of the MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison in KZN) and MEC Bheki Ntuli.
