A Ladysmith Gazette reporter conducted an interview with Cllr Majola from uMhlumayo, who said that the reason for this tragedy is unknown at this stage.

“Three-year-old Fana Mtshali went missing on Monday (October 12) at around 10am. Family members of the baby boy, along with community members, went on a massive search for the child. The search carried on until 10pm, and still there was no sign of the child. Yesterday morning, the community gathered again to go and search, but in vain. The child was then spotted at the edge of the yard (where his family lives).

His body was stuck in a hole, upside down, with his head and torso in the hole up to the waist.”

Cllr Majola says a postmortem will determine whether the child died an accidental death or was killed.
