Ladysmith: ‘Let’s work together to rebuild our economy’

"The digital economy is very important to create job opportunities" - MEC Dube-Ncube

Ladysmith KZN –  On Tuesday, September 22, the KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs, Nomsa Dube-Ncube – joined by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Phaahla, uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe  Mazibuko, local mayors and traditional leadership – visited Okhahlamba Local Municipality.

The main objective of the meeting was the implementation of the District Development Model (DDM) in order to drive socio-economic development. Emphasis was also placed on the fact that local government is the best place to create a memorable experience for tourists.
 
MEC Dube-Ncube said they need to do better for the people by bringing service delivery, reconstruction plans and job opportunities, as the tourism sector was badly affected by the pandemic. “Many people lost their income during this trying period. The digital economy is very important to create job opportunities.”
 
Mayor Mazibuko said that as we settle into the new normal, we must all continue to exercise every precaution to avoid infection and keep ourselves safe, and also keep our economy open.
 
” Let’s work together to rebuild our economy,” said Mayor Mazibuko.
 
Dr Phaahla said the nation mourns those who have passed away due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said uThukela District performed very well, as many people have recovered. He went on to say that this pandemic has put a strain on the Department of Health, and passed his gratitude to all front-line workers.
 
 
After the meeting, there was an official opening of the digital centre established by the Moses Kotane Institute of Technology. In addition, social relief packages were handed over to needy families as part of ensuring food security. There was a walkabout at the Royal Natal Park and a wine-tasting session at Cathedral Peak.
