ESTCOURT: Aster Cricket Club celebrates 20th anniversary

This was the brainchild of the late Ravi Adhari, who even through the adversity of a lack of funding and the lack of any sort of proper playing kit, took a gamble on a bunch of kids

Aster Cricket Club is named after Aster Road, a small cul-de-sac in the suburb of Forderville.

It was in this road where a number of neighbourhood youngsters gathered every day after school to participate in a game of “tennis ball” cricket.

These friendly games played by a group of friends went on for a number of years, with the only object being to pass time.

However, this all changed in September 2000 when Aster Cricket Club was formed.

This was the brainchild of the late Ravi Adhari, who even through the adversity of a lack of funding and the lack of any sort of proper playing kit, took a gamble on a bunch of kids, scraped up what little cash they all could afford, and joined the local town league which, at the time, was Village Green Cricket.

And as they say, the rest is history and a proud history at that. Aster Cricket Club has been in existence ever since and has been an ever-present competing force in all local leagues.

The club has had its fair share of success and failure over the years, and has evolved in terms of personnel, but has continued to abide by its foundations of discipline and commitment – but most of all to play the game with a smile.

The club would like to thank all of its current and former players, the club’s supporters, friends and family, Ayob Onia and the Umtshezi Cricket Association for all their support and efforts over these amazing 20 years to build such a proud club. Here’s hoping for many more!
