NEWCASTLE ADVERTISER: Local artist joins the Joburg art space

Nomfundo utilises earthy tones in her work and is a fan of unusual materials.

In this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser, we interview Newcastle-born and Johannesburg-based artist, Nomfundo Mkhize. She was recently invited to display her work in the LABYRINTHINE exhibition at art gallery, Berman Contemporary.

For the full interview, be sure to pick up a copy of this week’s print edition. For a sneak peak at the interview, read a few insights from Nomfundo below:

Which local and international artists do you draw inspiration from?

“Nandipha Mntambo – she has a similar aesthetic to what I work with in terms of Zulu traditions and her work is heavily textured; it reminds me of my own work and traditions. She’s a black girl and is in those high spaces where I see myself one day. Marlene Dumas – she is South African but is also international. She is a great storyteller and her visual work and the work behind it, inspire me.”

Is there a future for artists in South Africa?

“Definitely – we are late to the party because a lot of our arts and crafts were repossessed and taken abroad, so now we are focusing on keeping our art in South Africa and there is an audience for it. It’s growing rapidly and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

If you could travel abroad for inspiration, where would that be?

“I’ve always gravitated towards Namibia – it’s not that special, but the connection between the desert and the ocean is a meeting of these two powerful elements. Also Italy – I would love to be part of the Venice Biennale and I’ve set that as a goal for myself.”
