Marching healthcare workers not safe from Covid-19?

Community Health Workers demand a R2000 Covid-19 danger allowance

Ladysmith KZN: All Community Health Workers (CHWs) under the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) joined forces on Tuesday (September 1) and embarked on a peaceful march.

They voiced their grievances, with their main concern being that they do not feel safe from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

On Tuesday, NUPSAW secretary Mr Siphiwe Gabela handed over a memorandum at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, which was signed by Dr Pule; and also at the Department of Social Development (DSD), where the memorandum was accepted by Ms Nomusa Madlala.

NUPSAW members are demanding the absorption of all CHWs on DPSA salary level 5, as well as a R2000 Covid-19 danger allowance.

They further stated that they demand the provision of PPE for all CHWs before performance of work; that all CHW supervisors be compensated for performing supervisor duties; Community Health Facilitators be translated to salary level 7; and that all CHWs who are still employed by NGOs and NPOs must be absorbed by the respective department on a full-time basis.

During the peaceful march, NUPSAW members carried placards on which were written “NUPSAW demands supervisors to be compensated for performing supervisory duties” and “Absorb all CHWs on level 2 as an interim solution”. They also sang and danced.

Police and Public Safety monitored the situation.
