Muscling flexing back at the gyms

"If you look good, you feel good. It's psychological as well as physical."

At 56-years-old ‘big guy’, Gavin Flanagan, has the body and energy that is the envy of many.
Always exuberant and ‘on the go’, Gavin says he owes his ‘full throttle’ style to a rigorous body building routine, diet, mind-set and never standing still.
He juggles his steel business with his gym, Gav’s Gym and Fitness Centre, which share the same premises, adjacent to the Dundee Boulevard Pick n Pay Centre.

The relaxing of lockdown measures, introduced in March to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, knocked the gym business flat. Gavin says it was a tough five months, worse than a work out with tractor tyre, he quips, as the Centre brought in no income.

“We are back now and have all the safety protocols in place such as santizing, the wearing of masks etc. We are open from 5am to 8pm in the week so these hours ensure that the guys do not overcrowd the gym so we can implement social distancing.”
Gavin believes it is now more important than ever to boost one’s immune system by staying fit.

“If you look good, you feel good. It’s psychological as well as physical.”
He started working out 26 years ago and says he loves it.
“I have never entered a body building competition but my mates are badgering me to do so. So I think this will be the time to do it – and measure myself up against guys in my age group.”
